Powder Skiing Out West

To ski the Rockies means to ski the big mountains, big runs, big powder skiing and have a true mountain adventure.

I was hooked about 25 years ago. My first ski trip was to Park City, Utah. I skied Park City West, Deer Valley (they skied in Fur Coats, swanky and cool, never seen that anywhere else), Alta and Snowbird.

Do you know anything about precious metals?

I certainly didn’t, but I do now. I have educated myself from various resources online and close personal friends. The value of knowledge is far greater than money, but without the right knowledge the value of your money today could dwindle away to nothing. Another way to show you how important it is to educate yourself is to look at your 401k statement. How much money have you lost? Are you still losing? Do you even open up your statements anymore? Maybe an adviser has told you the stock market is a long term investment strategy. No problem if we had a stable economy. I have close family members who have lost chunks of money to long term investments that can’t be recovered ever! There is just not enough years of work to make it up. How long have you worked? You worked your ASS off right? You work hard for your money!

I love vintage cars and motorcycles. I have a 1977 BMW R100S motorcycle that I rode back and forth to California twice, rode in a event that started in Mexico and ended in Canada that totaled 8000 miles and I did it in 2 weeks, it’s called the 3 Flags. My bike has 100,000 miles on it and I have studied everything I could get my hands on to learn how to fix just about everything on my bike. I belong to 2 online BMW groups which have proven to be better than a Chilton’s manual on how-to fix my Airhead. The point is, I knew how to take the transmission out of my bike or rebuild the carburetors on the side of the road in less than a ½ hour if I had too, but I knew nothing about my money. I put money in our 401K, saved some money (bike money really) and bought some individual stocks through a prominent brokerage service. The process was simple, a 401K guy came into work said this is the plan and here are the funds to choose from. I researched on their site for more info and decided what funds to direct our money into. I forgot the verbiage, but the funds were categorized something like this High Risk – Better return, Safe – minimal return, Less Safe – Super minimal return.

I made the most common mistake probably everyone makes, my money is safe in my 401K, my money is working for me, wrong, wrong, wrong! The market is based off the dollar and if the dollar loses value so does your entire 401K portfolio. Why do you think the media is always telling the public what the market did today? Because most people only get their information from the media.

I have always been

excited to see the “fireworks”.

In Cincinnati where I grew up my mom (Dad could not stand the crowds) used to take us to the WEBN fireworks on the Ohio River every year. Man was it awesome, literally between the Kentucky side of the river and the Ohio side of the river were hundreds of thousands of people I think I remember one year it was estimated at 500,000. It was crazy, biggest crowd I have ever been in. We spread out the blanket claimed our spot and out came the bucket of KFC. All I remember was eating the skin first then devouring each piece right to the bone, next would grab a biscuit, cole slaw and A bottle of ice cold coke.  My brother and I  would run up a down the hill play with other kids and just sit and watch all the people and the boats on the river.

We would wait for the night to come and all the radios to sync to the one channel and become one gigantic speaker that would fill Downtown Cincinnati with music to the fireworks.

Man what goosebumps anticipating the boomers that echoed through the buildings downtown!
We made the trip every year from the very first one and every year for 15 years.. It really is amazing and one of the largest fireworks displays in the USA.

Lets fast forward a few years when I moved to northern Ohio on Lake Erie and met my wife. Toledo has a similar fireworks display probably like many other cities that are on the water, but the coolest part is going by boat. I was hooked on my very first boat ride and actually we practically lived on the boat in the summer. We would leave in the early afternoon back in to our dock right behind the music stage and be front and center for the fireworks later that night. The lawn would be jam packed with blankets and kids dancing to the bands.

It’s always the same feeling leading up to a fireworks display.

Don’t you feel the anticipation all day long and wonder what’s going to be new, how loud is it going get, how long will the finale be. Think of your favorite fireworks memory, what is it? Think back to how you felt when you heard that huge boom that pushed your stomach in, at least that’s what it felt like when you were a kid right. You sit wondering when the next one will come, waiting for the excitement to continue.

Tonights the night and I can’t wait! Now We have a 10 year old and the best part now is watching the expression she has on her face with each burst of sparkling light in the sky. This past weekend we had a great private fireworks display.  I’m going to leave you with a video of our display. This was the first time having a part in a private fireworks display and it won’t be my last. Take pictures, make a video, tell me about other firework displays to go see below.
